2009 International Conference
on Prematurity and Stillbirth
May 7-10, 2009 | Seattle, WA, USA

Global Action Agenda
Preterm birth and stillbirth are complex local and global health problems that require an interdisciplinary research approach and an international commitment. In May 2009, key stakeholders collaborated to make recommendations for a Global Action Agenda (GAA) at the International Conference on Prematurity and Stillbirth. The primary goal of the GAA is to find creative solutions to promote initiatives that will improve maternal, fetal, newborn and child health. Click here to learn more.
About the Conference
GAPPS and conference co-conveners invited a multi-disciplinary group of experts who share a common goal: to improve maternal, newborn and child health globally. Invitees represented developing and developed countries, and include researchers, healthcare practitioners, UN and government agencies, nonprofits, policymakers, and funders.
The conference program was composed of an opening session, plenary sessions and 12 thematic workgroups. The almost 200 attendees worked collaboratively to achieve three primary goals:
- Develop a roadmap of short- and long-term initiatives, including an international research agenda that would lead to new interventions;
- Identify the most successful current interventions to improve maternal, newborn and child health outcomes; and
- Set the stage for policy action among global stakeholders. This comprehensive agenda will ultimately help achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals to improve maternal and child health and accelerate progress to improve the lives of families globally.
